Every parent wants their child to do well in school, and it could be alarming to find that your kid is not doing so hot in classes like English. If you want to help your child turn things around, here are some tips that might help.

Speak Solid English at Home

If you want your child to take English class seriously, you should take the language seriously yourself at home, for example, use proper grammar when you speak. If you notice your child making a mistake, offer a gentle correction. Try not to overdo it though, as you want them to actually listen and not resent the lessons.

Let Them Learn While Having Fun

Sometimes kids need a distraction from learning in order to actually learn. Read your child a fun book that will teach them new words. Play a game like "house" where you can describe different household items. If you think it will help, place note cards or other labels on top of each item your child will play with. If your kid likes playing with their hands, let them craft something with a Play-Doh set and then ask them to spell the item they just crafted.

Have Family Reading Time

Make reading a favorite hobby of Mom and Dad and your child will likely follow suit, at least at a young age. Let your child read through an age appropriate book on their own and then ask them questions about what they learned.

Use Audio Resources

You can increase your child's vocabulary by speaking to them directly, but if you can't be with them 24/7, use other sources of audio to get the job done. Tune the radio to a talk station and let your child listen. Put on an educational video that will teach them and entertain them at the same time.

Use Text-Heavy Video Games

Get your child an age appropriate game that has a good amount of reading involved in order to progress. Your child will read the various in-game menus or in-game dialogue and start internalizing some of it even if they don't yet understand what everything means. Most kids love playing video games anyway, so this is another great way to get them to learn without even realizing it.

If your child is not performing well in English class, take steps to introduce them to a greater vocabulary in both the written and spoken word. If you want to supercharge your child's development, consider hiring a kids English tutoring expert today.
